What rebates can Victorians get for solar?

Two layers stack together. The Victorian Solar Homes rebate gives eligible owner-occupiers up to $1,400 off a solar panel installation, plus an optional interest-free loan of the same amount. From 1 July 2026 the household income cap tightened from $210,000 to $150,000 per year, so check your eligibility before counting on it.

Separately, the federal STC incentive discounts every eligible installation at the point of sale, worth roughly $2,000 to $3,000 on a 6.6kW system in Melbourne. How long until solar pays for itself?

What is a feed-in tariff and why is it so low now?

A feed-in tariff is what your electricity retailer pays you for solar power you export to the grid. In Victoria it is now only a few cents per kilowatt-hour, a fraction of what you pay to buy power, because so much solar already floods the grid in the middle of the day.

This is not a reason to skip solar; it is a reason to design around self-use. Size the system for your actual consumption, shift usage into daylight hours, and treat exports as a small bonus rather than the business case. How should I compare solar installers?

Six checks cover most of it: a Clean Energy Council accredited installer doing the actual work, a Google rating of 4.5 or better across a meaningful number of recent reviews, an itemised quote naming the exact panel and inverter models, three warranties in writing (panels, inverter, and the installer's own workmanship), a physical local presence, and no pressure to sign today.

Why is one quote thousands of dollars cheaper than the others?

Something is different, and it is rarely something good. The usual suspects: budget panels or an unproven inverter brand, the sale made by a marketing company that subcontracts the installation to whoever is cheapest that week, corners cut on mounting and cabling you cannot see from the ground, or a business structured to disappear before warranty claims arrive.

A low price is not automatically a scam, but make the installer explain exactly what makes it cheaper, in writing. If the answer is vague, pay more elsewhere. The workmanship warranty is only worth something if the company still exists to honour it.

Do panel and inverter brands really matter?

The inverter matters most. It works hardest, fails first, and a dead inverter means a dead system. Choosing a well-proven inverter brand over the cheapest option typically costs $500 to $1,500 more and is usually worth it.

Panels are more commoditised: mid-tier panels from established manufacturers hit the value sweet spot for most homes. Should I get a battery with my solar system?

Batteries have become much better value since the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program began in July 2025: it discounts installations by roughly 30%, currently around $250 per usable kilowatt-hour on the first 14kWh, taking a typical 10kWh battery from about $12,000 to the high $8,000s installed.

They make the most sense if your evening usage is heavy, you are on a time-of-use tariff, or blackout backup matters to you. On pure payback they are still slower than panels, so if the budget forces a choice: panels first, battery later. The system just needs a battery-ready inverter or space for one. What size battery should I get?

Match the battery to your evening and overnight consumption, not to the biggest number the salesperson offers. For most Melbourne homes that lands between 10 and 15kWh: enough to cover the evening peak and morning routine without paying for capacity that sits unused.

Check your electricity bills for daily usage, subtract what you use during daylight, and that gap is roughly what the battery should cover. Note the federal discount applies at full rate on the first 14kWh of usable capacity, so very large batteries earn proportionally less rebate. An installer who asks for your usage data before recommending a size is a good sign; one who quotes a size in the first phone call is not.
